Authors:Raymond Oliver, Jennifer Tillotson, Anne Toomey
Abstract:Today, there is an opportunity to bring together creative design activities to exploit the responsive
and adaptive ¡®smart¡¯ materials that are a result of rapid development in electro, photo active polymers
or OFEDs (organic thin film electronic devices), bio-responsive hydrogels, integrated into MEMS/
NEMS devices and systems respectively. Some of these integrated systems are summarised in this paper,
highlighting their use to create enhanced functionality in textiles, fabrics and non-woven large area thin
films. By understanding the characteristics and properties of OFEDs and bio polymers and how they can
be transformed into implementable physical forms, innovative products and services can be developed,
with wide implications. The paper outlines some of these opportunities and applications, in particular, an
ambient living platform, dealing with human centred needs, of people at work, people at home and people
at play. The innovative design affords the accelerated development of intelligent materials (interactive,
responsive and adaptive) for a new product & service design landscape, encompassing assistive healthcare
(smart bandages and digital theranostics), ambient living, renewable energy (organic PV and solar textiles),
interactive consumer products, interactive personal & beauty care (e-Scent) and a more intelligent built
environment.

Analysis of Pressure Distribution of Brassiere¡¯s Under Wires
Authors:Li-Zhuo Wang, Dong-Sheng Chen, Bin Lin
Abstract:To find out the distribution of pressure on brassiere¡¯s under wires, two tests of under wires were
done using AMI-3037 Air-pack type contact surface pressure measuring system. The brassieres used were
commercial brassieres. In test 1 (T1), three different styles of brassieres are all 75A in size and each piece
is tested by the same subject (S1). In test 2 (T2), a brassiere of 75A size is tested by three different subjects
(S1, S2, S3). Three subjects are healthy unmarried women of age group 22 to 26 years. Seven points were
measured in T1. Four points were measured when the subject made four different poses in T2. The results
indicate: 1) There are three different pressure distributions in T1; 2) The pressure values are affected significantly
at different points, brassieres, the interaction of points and brassiere, the interaction of points and
subjects; 3) Most pressures of center front are larger and most pressures of the lowest point are small at the
under wires; 4) The pressure values change while breathing. The range of most pressure values is between
0 and 0.5kPa except few ranging from 0.5 kPa to 1.5 kPa. 5) The shape of under wires is an important factor
in healthcare of women.

Authors:Wen-Jing Liu, Yong-Zhu Cui, Lei Zhang, Sen-Fang Ren
Abstract:The natural colorant was extracted from cortex phellodendri and rubia using biological enzyme
and ultrasonic technology together, and the effect of biological enzyme and ultrasonic technology on natural
plant dyes extract yield was discussed through absorbance values of extracted solution in this work. Also, the
dyeing solution (cortex phellodendri and rubia) extracted by enzyme-ultrasonic method was found to give the
highest color difference (¦¤E) among dyed fabrics. It was proved through the experiment that, natural plant
dyes extract yield can be increased by using biological enzyme and ultrasonic technology together, with high
efficiency, energy saving and pollution dipping features. The optimized condition for dye extraction was to
extract the dry cortex phellodendri and drubia at 50¡æ for 60min with pH 4.5.

A Study on the Antimicrobial Finishing of Rodalon on Silken Carpet
Authors:Ali Ashjaran, Reza Ghazi-Saeidi, Abusaeid Rashidi, Ramin Khajavi
Abstract:In Iranian culture, carpet is the first choice for covering the floor; it is a very suitable substrate for
growing pathogenic microbes. In this research, the main aim is to investigate the antibacterial effectiveness
of rodalon solutions on silken fibers by spraying method used in silken carpet. Silken pile carpet laid in a
public place (in VIP?? of The Homa hotel) for 30 days and some microbes found on them were investigated
The antimicrobial effect of different Rodalon solutions on the identified microbes was studied in vitro. The
silken fibers were treated with (same different)??? solutions of Rodalon like before and the antimicrobial
effectiveness was assessed by the zone of inhibition method at different times. Two pieces of carpet untreated
and treated with Rodalon solution were sewed together and laid for two weeks in a public place and the
amounts of bacterial growth on it was determined by colony count method and the results were compared.
Finally some mechanical properties of treated silken fibers were measured after 30 days and was compared
with untreated one. The results showed the presence of some pathogenic microbes on the laid carpet such
as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The inhalation time for treated silken fibers improved. The
amount of colony growth on treated carpet reduced considerably and moreover the mechanical test results
showed no significant deterioration effect of studied properties in comparison to the untreated yarn.

The Influence of the Value Changes on the Perception of Costume Colour
Authors:Xiao-Feng Jiang, Fang Qin, Shan-Shan Wang, Guo-Lian Liu
Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceptual attributes of
costume colour and the colour value changes. In this study, ¡°gorgeous¡± and ¡°plain¡± as words for description
of human colour emotion were used, and costume picture samples and colour piece samples of same colours
with 40 hues and 9 levels of values were evaluated on emotion variables by 32 subjects in the behavioural
trials. The results showed that the colours of medium values have the most gorgeous emotion, and presented
sensitivity to subjects during the evaluation of ¡°gorgeousness¡±, the RT (response time) of costume is less
than the RT of colour pieces, it is easier to make judgment on colour emotion in costume, while the lowervalue-
colour and the higher-value-colour reduce the effect on ¡°gorgeous¡± emotion.

The 5Ps Model to Optimize Compression Athletic Wear Comfort in Sports
Authors:Rong Liu, Trevor Little
Abstract:Engineered design of compression athletic wear has been selectively applied in various recognized
Olympic sports and popular recreational activities. This recent development is, as one type of additional
body-behavioural support, protection and adjustment, plays a crucial role, in improving the athletes¡¯
performances. Typically, this is accomplished by providing engineered design support, pressure, and
form-fit on targeted areas of athletes¡¯ body. In the present paper, a contextual model including 5Ps (i.e.
Physical, Psychological, Physiological, Psychophysical, and Psychophysiological properties) related to
user comfort and performance, has been developed to analyze multiple relationships between the athlete,
athletic wear, immediate body space and sports environment, which would help us understand the effects of
athletic wear on sports performance. The 5Ps reference model explores the mechanisms of action of bodyclothing-
environment system from a comprehensive view, thus effectively optimizing functional design of
compression athletic wear in practice to enhance sports achievement and comfort.

Selective Attachment of Gold Nanoparticles to Ionic Liquids Adsorbed Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes
Authors:Xu-Qing Liu, Feng Zhou, Yi Li, Zi-Jian Zheng, Jun-Yan Hu
Abstract:Room temperature ionic liquids were adsorbed on the surface of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes
(MWCNTs) by electrostatic interaction between carboxyl groups on the chemically oxidized MWCNTs
surface and room temperature ionic liquids. The cations of ionic liquids and carboxyl groups on the carbon
nanotube surface are put into a one-to-one correspondence by the electrostatic interaction. Negatively
charged 15 nm gold nanoparticles are subsequently anchored to the surface of the MWCNTs through
the electrostatic interaction between the ionic liquids and the gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles are
selectively attached to chemically functionalized surface sites of carbon nanotubes. This approach provides
an efficient method to attach other nanostructures to carbon nanotubes and can be used as an illustrative
detection of the functional groups on carbon nanotube surfaces.

Design and Study of Clothing Structure for People with Limb Disabilities
Authors:Wei-Min Chang, Yu-Xiao Zhao, Rui-Ping Guo, Qi Wang, Xiao-Dan Gu
Abstract:The human body¡¯s features are the key to design clothing structure. Between people with physical
disabilities and normal people, there are evident differences in their living requirements. Embellishment is
needed because of physical distortion; as well as, functionalized design is strongly required to allow more
independence in dressing and more self sufficiency in daily activities. Therefore, pattern design should
encourage the health recovery, improve living style, and realize personal expectations. The final aim is to
allow people with a disability a life of self-respect and facility, and enable them to mingle with family and
society to a greater extent. In the past, there had been some clothing designed for people with disabilities.
However most of those designs lack aesthetic consideration, and usually focus on the excessively direct
aspect of function. Based on the characteristics of human body and movements, particularity for people with
limb disabilities, the clothing pattern was analysed by means of real examples. Combining the knowledge
of human engineering (ergonomics), textile materials and apparel technology, special modifications were
designed in the garment to de-emphasize visual evidence of a person¡¯s disability, and strengthen function
and convenience to meet the needs of body activities. Clothing designed for disabled people should contain
elements of both function and beauty, which can help them raise to the ¡°convenient¡±, ¡°beautiful¡± and
¡°functional¡± level from the ¡°inconvenient¡±, ¡°concealment¡± level. As a result, improvement in the quality of
life of people with limb disabilities will be achieved.
